Hysterectomy can be performed by abdomen, vagina or laparoscopy. The method of hysterectomy depends on the surgeon's skills, expertise and preferences. The reasons for hysterectomy and characteristics such as female weight, pelvic surgery history and whether there are children were also considered.
What is the method of hysterectomy?
1、 Abdominal hysterectomy
Abdominal hysterectomy is performed when extensive examination is needed, such as cancer, uterine enlargement, obesity or women who have never given birth. The presence of macrofibroma, extensive adhesions or endometriosis is another example of this method that is usually preferred. Abdominal hysterectomy can be performed through bikini line cutting. The bikini line cutting is completed horizontally and directly on the pubic hairline or vertical incision. The incision includes the incision from the navel to the pubic hairline. Bikini series surgery is more commonly used because it will leave invisible scars and shorten the recovery time.
The main advantage of abdominal hysterectomy is low injury rate of urinary tract and blood vessels. If necessary, the method of abdominal hysterectomy also allows simultaneous repair of the patient's uterine prolapse. The disadvantage of abdominal hysterectomy is that patients usually feel more pain during the operation.
2、 Vaginal hysterectomy
Vaginal hysterectomy involves incision in the upper part of the vagina and removal of the uterus through the vagina. The advantages of this method are less pain, shorter hospitalization time and no obvious scars. The review of different surgical methods of hysterectomy in non-cancer state concluded that vaginal hysterectomy should be given priority to abdominal hysterectomy as far as possible.
3、 Laparoscopic hysterectomy
Laparoscopic hysterectomy is used to describe hysterectomy, in which any part of the operation is performed by laparoscopy, and there are three or four small incisions in the abdomen. Laparoscopy is a device that allows you to observe the inside of the abdomen and insert it into the abdominal cavity through one of the incisions. Then, the surgeon can observe the pelvic organs on the video screen and insert the surgical equipment through the remaining incisions.
Compared with abdominal hysterectomy, laparoscopic surgery is considered to be more beneficial to patients because of shorter hospital stay and sometimes recovery time. It is important that surgeons have experience in laparoscopic hysterectomy before realizing these benefits.
