Spain's new research shows that sperm can swim fast after regular exercise
According to the Daily Mail of the UK on November 2, a new Spanish study published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology found that regular exercise can improve sperm swimming speed and make sperm more energetic.
In this new study from the University of Cordoba, Spain, scientists evaluated the differences in semen quality and hormone levels between 31 male participants who often exercise and those who do not exercise, investigated many factors including sperm number and sperm vitality, and analyzed hormone levels including testosterone (androgen), cortisol and follicle-stimulating hormone. The results showed that the semen indexes of the men who love sports were better.
The head of the new study, Dr. Diana Vaamund, said that although the new study needs to be confirmed by a larger study, the new research results have clearly shown that exercise can improve the "testicular environment" and stimulate healthier sperm production.
Researchers said that because the quality of male sperm has declined in the past 50 years, this new research result is of great significance. There are many factors that lead to the decline of male sperm quality, such as drinking, smoking and obesity. The researchers also warned that although exercise can help improve sperm quality, excessive exercise may backfire. A 2010 study by Dr. Vaamund showed that the sperm quality of sports stars is worse than that of regular men. One of the main reasons is that excessive high-intensity exercise leads to the decline of sperm quality.
