We must pay attention to the occurrence of chocolate cysts. Especially after the emergence of this disease, there are also many abnormal manifestations that require immediate and reasonable examination at a regular hospital.
What is a chocolate cyst?
Chocolate cyst is a pathological change in women with endometriosis. The occurrence of chocolate cyst is mainly due to poor drainage caused by the detachment of endometrial fragments from the uterine wall during menstruation. Menstrual blood cannot be completely discharged from the vagina, and a small amount of menstrual blood flows back into the pelvic cavity through the fallopian tubes, causing blood stasis. It grows on the surface of the ovary and other parts of the pelvic cavity, forming an ectopic cyst. This type of old blood is brown in color, sticky as a paste, like chocolate, hence it is called a chocolate cyst.
Symptoms of chocolate cyst
1. Infertility: In clinical practice, most patients with ovarian chocolate cysts are accompanied by infertility, and among patients with unexplained infertility, most are accompanied by endometriosis. Infertility is one of the most common symptoms of ovarian chocolate cysts.
2. Irregular menstruation: Symptoms such as excessive menstrual flow and excessive menstrual blood are common in ovarian chocolate patients. Generally, female patients have more menstrual blood and longer menstrual periods.
3. Sexual pain: Symptoms of sexual pain in endometriosis that occur in the posterior part of the uterus, rectum, vagina, and uterosacral ligament are often more pronounced than those before menstruation.
4. Dysmenorrhea: The main symptom of chocolate cysts is dysmenorrhea, which is usually secondary and worsens year by year. Some patients do not have obvious dysmenorrhea. The dysmenorrhea of this disease starts before menstruation, and some may even occur after it ends, usually requiring a continuous menstrual cycle of one month or many days to end. The area of pain is generally in the lower abdomen or surrounding area.
5. Peritonitis: Ovarian chocolate cyst with fragile wall, insufficient elasticity, accumulation of menstrual blood, and increased pressure inside the cyst. The contents of the cyst overflow into the abdominal cavity, stimulating the peritoneum, causing peritonitis and acute abdomen.
Judgment of chocolate cyst
1. Abdominal circumference thickening and intra-abdominal mass: This is the most common phenomenon in patients. The patient noticed that their clothes and belt were very small and attached great importance to the enlargement of their abdomen. In the morning, they accidentally noticed that there was a lump in their abdomen when they pressed it down, which caused discomfort and swelling.
2. Abdominal pain: The tumor has no complications and the pain is minimal. Therefore, patients with ovarian tumors feel abdominal pain, especially in those who suddenly experience it, often due to twisted tumor stems, which occasionally cause cyst rupture, bleeding, and infection. In addition, malignant cysts often cause abdominal pain and leg pain, which often leads to patients seeking medical attention urgently.
