The new study conducted by the University of Texas in the United States surveyed 375 male and female participants. Men are more likely to choose women with better body curves as their dating partners, but when choosing long-term relationships, women's faces are more important.
Researchers say that female body shape and face are important clues or indicators of reproductive value and fertility. But new research reveals that when looking for short-term partners, men tend to value women's physique more.
Many early studies on physical attractiveness have emphasized that factors such as body symmetry, skin texture and Waist–hip ratio are important factors for attracting the opposite sex. However, there is almost no research on the association between facial or physical features and fertility.
The new study also found that women place greater emphasis on male appearance when choosing a partner, whether it is seeking short-term relationships (such as encounters in bars, dance halls, nightclubs, etc.) or long-term partners.
Researchers say that women's faces express relatively rich information about their reproductive value, while their body shape better reflects important information such as whether their fertility is strong at the moment. Research has found that both reproductive value and fertility cannot reach high peaks simultaneously. In the general population, reproductive value and fertility reach their highest values at the ages of 17 and 24, respectively.
